Vegan Product Review: Nuun Electrolyte Drink Tablets
A Review by Kristin Wuhrman.
Nuun electrolyte tablets were included in the Fall 2016 Vegan Outdoor Adventures Seasonal Sample Box.
What exactly are electrolytes and what purpose do they serve for our health?
A simple way to understand electrolytes is to think about laundry soap in your washing machine. Soap doesn’t make your washer run, however it’s essential to get your clothes clean. Having balanced electrolytes is necessary for your nervous, digestive, cardiac, and muscular systems to function well. The key electrolytes that maintain our body’s fluid balance include sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium.
You will feel an imbalance pretty easily, and depending on the type of electrolyte imbalance, there are a handful of symptoms that can occur including:
- Feeling very thirsty
- Frequent headaches
- Muscle aches, weakness, twitches and spasms
- Confusion and trouble concentration
- Irregular heartbeats
- Digestions issues like cramps, constipation or diarrhea
- Joint pain
- Dizziness (especially when standing up suddenly)
- Blood pressure changes
- Changes in appetite or body weight
So, how do you take charge of keeping your electrolytes healthy with an active lifestyle?
First off, know your body! Water and electrolytes are typically consumed by athletes both during and after training. A well-known recommendation for years has been to also replenish electrolytes post activity since you lose many of them in your sweat. Both water and electrolytes (mainly sodium) need to be replaced after workouts to re-establish “normal” body water levels. Don’t feel as if you need to go crazy with water after a workout, but make sure you eat a nutrient-dense balanced plant-based meal afterward and have some water throughout the rest of the day. If you start feeling dizzy or cramping up, try drinking lots of fluids immediately and consuming electrolytes until you feel better.
There are several options out there that helps replenish electrolytes quickly and efficiently, however the majority of them contain high amounts of simple sugar, such as Gatorade and Powerade.
When you’re replenishing electrolytes throughout the day, you don’t want to be consuming high amounts of simple and artificial sugars. That is why nuun tablets rock! You can add them to any drink of your choice, and they contain all the essential electrolytes you need to maintain levels. Each tablet contains less than 12 calories and comes in available in a convenient portable tube.
I love nuun
nuun has a few different options for electrolytes: nuun active, nuun energy, plus for nuun and nuun all day. Be sure to check them all out as they apply to different needs. I received nuun energy cherry limeade with the VOA Fall Sample Box, which I had not tried yet and all I can say is WOW! nuun energy truly fuels you when you need a little lift. It includes plant-based caffeine sourced from green tea extract. Because it also includes b vitamins, this combination helps maintain higher levels of energy. As with all nuun products, nuun energy is vegan, gluten-free, dairy free and soy free. Yeah! What about sweeteners? No simple sugars here! nuun products are sweetened with the lovely monk fruit and a touch of stevia leaf extract.
When running long training runs, thanks to VOA, I now prefer to hydrate with nuun energy tablets. I stay hydrated and fueled without any energy dips. It’s also important to fuel with the proper nutrition both pre and post-run as well. I don’t typically feel depleted after a hard workout, but if you do, I recommend nuun energy post training as it will help you recover and rehydrate so you can carry on with your day. Also, nuun energy a great option if you need a quick “pick-me-up” in the afternoon that will energize you without a caffeine buzz. What’s lovely about nuun tablets is that you decide how strong you want the flavor to be by adjusting the amount of water you add to each tablet. It’s such a nice light flavor without the heavy sugar taste you get from other energy drinks. Checkout all 4 nuun energy flavors here!
